Build a mock Pirate Ship in your backyard to be your balloon launching target. From the porch, patio, or a decent distance away, launch water balloons at the ship to keep the bad guys at bay. Throw them at the ship by hand or use a Balloon Launcher to get more distance.
No water balloons around? Become a pirate for the day with your child and see how long you can make believe together. At the very least, try out the pirate accent for a day!

PurposeFull People Kindness Family Activity

True Kindness can be shown when nothing is expected in return. Talk about a way your family can serve together and spread Kindness in the community. Discuss the impact your family can make by volunteering to help others. Involve your children in as much as the process as possible. Your children can help research volunteer opportunities on the web and/or help make phone calls to organizations. Service ideas:

  • Volunteer at a local organization that serves meals to others
  • Search through your house for gently used books, toys, and games to donate to a shelter or service organization
  • Visit a nursing home to talk with the residents
  • Have a lemonade stand in your yard and offer the lemonade for free
  • Visit a shelter and play with the cats or walk the dogs

Commit as a family to doing this kind service for at least the next month. At the end of each visit, discuss what it was like to give your time in Kindness.

February Math Tip

Fractions and Time!

What does it mean when people say: Quarter to? Half past? It’s so confusing! When we say things like “quarter to” and “half past”, we are dividing the minutes into fractions, or equal parts! Fractions and minutes are closely related!

Let’s think: There are 60 minutes in an hour, right?

So if I say: it’s half past 7. That means half of the minutes have passed. What’s half of 60 minutes? 30! So it’s 30 minutes past 7:00. That means it’s 7:30!

If I say: It’s quarter past 2. That means a quarter, or one fourth, of the minutes have passed. When we divide 60 minutes into four equal parts, we get 15. So it’s 15 minutes past 2; 2:15!

If I say: It’s quarter to 4. A quarter, or one fourth, of 60 minutes is the same as 15 minutes. When we say “quarter to” that means it takes 15 minutes to get to the next hour. So a quarter to 4 means 15 minutes until 4:00. If we subtract 15 minutes from 60, we get 45! So a quarter to 4 is 3:45! In other words, it takes 15 more minutes to get to 4:00.

Try using this language when talking about time with your child. It will prepare them for lessons in class for years to come!

Now that we are in the second semester of school we are allowing students to bring INDIVIDUALLY PACKAGED, STORE bought birthday treats to school and with Valentine's Day coming up quickly, students will also be able to bring Valentines to share with their classmates.
