Penny War

Quinney Elementary raised over $1,400 for SOAR Fox Cities in the Penny War held Dec. 13-18!  Thank you to students and families for giving for our Cougar Council December Caring project and for this worthy cause!  Not only does our donation help and support the programs to empower people with differing abilities in our community, but the smiles, spirit, and excitement in the competition between grade levels as they watched the coin buckets grow was fun to see!  Thank you again EQ family and friends!!!

PAC NEWS

Thank you Parent Advisory Committee for helping to fund activities at the end of December.  Students enjoyed a pre-wrapped store bought treat and various classroom activities with their classmates the last week of school. Staff were treated to a warm beverage from the Benjamin Brewer Coffee Camper. The staff had rave reviews of this special treat!

Our next PAC meeting will be Tuesday, January 18th at 6:00 PM. If you would prefer to attend our meeting virtually, please email Mrs. Knapp at knapps@kaukaunasd.org.

iReady Testing

Between January 4-28 all students will be taking the Winter iReady Diagnostic test (Reading approx. 45 min, Math approx. 45 min). They took the same assessment in September when the school year began. The questions on these tests help to show how much students have grown from the fall until now and from year to year. There is nothing students need to prepare for these tests. Suggestions of things that can help your child do their best everyday are--
  • Make sure your child has a good night's rest
  • Have your child eat a healthy breakfast at home or at school.
  • Encourage our child to do their best!

Parental Controls for Devices and Online Games
As colder weather approaches, students are exposed to devices and online games for longer periods of time. Here are some great resources for parental controls:

January = Perseverance

This month we’re talking about the trait of Perseverance. The dictionary defines it as: “Persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.” The definition we are using in class is:

Perseverance: the ability to work through situations even when there are obstacles or challenges in the way.

A lot of research today is telling us that the highest indicators of success in our kids isn’t just about their grades or their IQ. The number one skill that helps people of all walks of life be successful is GRIT! The ability to persevere in the face of adversity or even failure. Over the course of the month, we will talk about inspiring people who faced many failures before they found success. We will talk about what it means to navigate tough stuff, even when it feels overwhelming or really hard. We will talk about having a Growth Mindset – to see challenges and failure as an opportunity to grow instead of a brick wall.

PENNY WAR - Penny War This Week!!

Dear Parents,

Every year the Cougar Council does a community CARING project in the month of December. Some of the organizations we have helped in the past are the Military soldiers, Ronald McDonald House, and Foster Families to name just a few. Next week, the Cougar Council will be kicking off a school wide fundraiser for SOAR Fox Cities!  One of the main reasons the Cougar Council chose this fundraiser is because we know there are people with special needs in our school and community that can benefit from this program.  The money raised for SOAR will go toward funding summer camps, day trips, Kidz Klub programming and any other needs they may have.

We will be doing this fundraiser Dec. 13th through Dec. 17th.

For our fundraiser, we will be doing a Penny Challenge. It’s a friendly competition among different grade levels to raise funds for SOAR Fox Cities. The goal of the Penny Challenge is to raise money by collecting as many NON-PENNIES (positive points) as possible in your grade level jar and putting as many PENNIES (negative points) in everyone else’s jars. Silver coins and dollars can be used to increase money totals for your grade and pennies will subtract amounts from other grades.  However, ALL the money will be donated to benefit those with special needs and their families.

Save those coins CARING COUGARS… and get ready to help others in need!!!

Thank you for your help in supporting this cause!

Winter Break Activities

As Winter break approaches, students are exposed to devices and online games for longer periods of time. Here are some great resources for parental controls:

Thank you for sending BOOTS!

The weather varies each day from morning recess to afternoon recess.  One thing that is for sure is that our grass and even blacktop areas can vary greatly in a day.  It will be beneficial to start sending boots to school with them daily even if there is no snow.  Boots will be very valuable even with just rain or a dusting of snow.  If you send them to school daily beginning now, your child will be prepared and will not need to sit in wet shoes.

Thank you for sending your student to school prepared...
  • EVERYDAY...
    • Boots
    • Coat
    • Lightweight Mittens
    • Hood or lightweight hat
  • On days with a prediction of SNOW
    • Snowpants
    • Snow mittens
    • Stocking Hat

Questions You Could Ask for Empathy at Home

  • What gets in the way of us showing Empathy to one another?
  • What is the difference between sympathy and Empathy?
  • What is a conflict that you had recently with someone? How do you think they were feeling and why may they have been feeling that way? How could you respond to that situation with empathy?

Conversations Starters for Empathy at Home

  • How do you know what you are feeling? How can you tell how someone else is feeling?
  • When do you feel most excited? Most upset? Most happy? Most sad?
  • How do you show Empathy towards your friends when they are sad?
  • What are things others might do when they’re sad, worried or frustrated? What might they say?
