Students and staff at Electa Quinney have been trying hard to grow our manners each week by building a list of TOP TEN MANNERS.  The February 18 - March 1 manner emphasizes "Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze".

Wisconsin Forward Spring State Assessment

The Wisconsin Forward Exam will be given in schools between March 18 and May 3, 2019. The Forward Exam is a state mandated summative assessment which provides information about what students know and can do in relation to the Wisconsin Academic Standards. Students receive a score based on their performance in each content area.

There are sample or practice test questions available for students. An Online Tools Training (OTT) is available for students at http://dpi.wi.gov/assessment/forward/sample-items. The OTT is intended to give students the opportunity to practice with tools available on the Forward Exam, as well as allow them to familiarize themselves with the testing platform. The OTT is not scored, nor is it intended to provide practice on the test content. Students will be exploring these tools and training at school prior to testing.

The Forward Exam will be administered online and be given to:

• Grades 3-8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics,
• Grades 4 and 8 in Science and,
• Grades 4, 8, and 10 in Social Studies

The Forward Exam includes several question types:

• Multiple-Choice (MC): Question that has four answer choices, including three distractors and one correct answer.
• Enhanced Selected Response (ESR): Question which may contain combinations of MC, short-answer, and technology-enhanced.
• Evidence-Based Selected Response (ESBR): Question which has two parts. The student answers Part A, then provides evidence in Part B to support answer in Part A.
• Text-Dependent Analysis (TDA): Question used on the ELA test. The TDA is a text-based analysis, based on a passage that is read by the student during the assessment. Students must draw on basic writing skills while inferring and synthesizing information from the passage in order to develop a comprehensive, holistic essay response. Students have up to 5000 characters to formulate their response.
• Technology-Enhanced (TE): TE questions allow for a more engaging, interactive assessment.

Accommodations and supports for students with disabilities and/or English language learners are built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured.

The estimated time for the test administration in each grade is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes for ELA, 1 hour and 45 minutes for Mathematics, 1 hour and 40 minutes for Science, and 1 hour and 30 minutes for Social Studies. These are estimated times, as the WI Forward Exam is not a timed test so students work at their own pace.

Family Event POSTPONED

As you may have heard, Gym A at Electa Quinney/NDLC is out of commission as the gym floor is replaced due to the flooding experienced with the pipe break on Friday, Feb. 8th.  With the limited gymnasium space, we have made the decision to postpone the Feb. 19th EQ Family Event - Kids Heart Challenge (previously Jump Rope for Heart).  When a future date is chosen we will notify families via the Family Blog, school calendar, and in students folders.  Please continue to collect pledges for the Kids Heart Challenge which are due no later than Friday, March 8th.  The students earn prizes for their efforts and our school receives a US game gift certificate to help purchase new PE equipment for our school!  All are welcome to participate even if you are not choosing to pledge.

Feb. 22 - George Washington Day

Friday, February 22nd is a Wisconsin School Observance Day honoring the first president of the United States. Washington was born February 22, 1732; died 1799. He is honored for his efforts to create a new nation dedicated to the rights of the people.Observed as a federal holiday (Presidents' Day) on the third Monday in February. (Monday, February 18, 2019)  Originally part of court statutes to observe these days and was enacted for the schools on June 27, 1923, from the 1923 Laws of Wisconsin, Chapter 307, section 20.

Author Visit:  Patricia Polacco

A wonderful opportunity came our way through the help and support of retired KASD Library Media Specialist, Mary VanderLoop.  Mrs. VanderLoop initiated and organized for the Award-winning children's author Patricia Polacco to visit Electa Quinney, Victor Haen and PCCS and speak with our 3rd grade and 4th-grade students.  With 3rd-grade students recently completing an author study of Polacco and 4th-grade students completing the same author study last year, this is a prime opportunity for our students and staff.  She will visit Electa Quinney on Tuesday of this week speaking to 3rd-grade students at 12:00 p.m. and 4th-grade students at 1:00 p.m.

SAFETY PATROL PROGRAM

We are excited to share with you that we will be starting a Safety Patrol Program, with the help of 4th grade students, for our building. Mrs. Nelson is the Coordinator for this great program. Here is some helpful information.

What is Safety Patrol?

• Safety Patrol is a leadership position to help classmates travel to and from school safely.
• Patrollers serve before and after school, keeping children away from traffic in bus loading/unloading areas.
• Patrollers direct children, not traffic.

What does this mean for our building?

• Safety patrollers will be by the bus area in the morning to help walk students from the busses to the playground.   
• Safety patrollers will walk bussers out of the building to the bus routes after school.
• Safety patrollers will stand by the route lines and then walk students to their bus.
• Safety patrollers are tentatively scheduled to start February 6th.
• Students will be made aware of Safety Patrol in the coming weeks - Stay tuned

Community Activity Fair - 4K-8

On Feb. 7th, 5-7 p.m., at River View is a Community Activity Fair for families of elementary to middle school-aged students.  The purpose is to try and give families one night and location that they can learn more about all the different clubs, sports, and organizations in the community.  This is geared for students grades 4K-8th grade.  Interested in learning about different community activities (clubs, sports, organizations) for your students ... all in one place? Some organizations scheduled to attend include: Kaukauna Recreation Department, YMCA, Girls Scouts, Kaukauna Gymnastics Club, Electric City Soccer, Kaukauna Running Club, Kaukauna Raiders Football, Kaukauna Youth Baseball, Sandbox Volleyball, Whitehead’s Martial Arts Academy, and more!  We look forward to seeing you there!

Manner of the Week:  Be a Good Sport

Students and staff at Electa Quinney have been trying hard to grow our manners each week by building a list of TOP TEN MANNERS.  Earlier in January we focused on keeping negative thoughts to yourself.  The January 22 - Feburary 1 manner emphasizes "Be a Good Sport".

Don’t be:

• The “arguer” (not playing by the rules)
• The “victim” (fakes injury or feels that everyone is out to get him/her)
• The “sulker” (can’t let it go)
• The “bragger” (over celebrates)

Do be:

• The “encourager” (we all need cheerleaders)
• The “helper” (help others learn the game)
• The “gracious winner” (not bragging)
• The “fun player” (remember it is only a game)

Good sportsmanship is not only for athletes. It is for parents and fans, too. It is not only for sports, but for any kind of game, or any time you are part of a “team.”

Youth Art Month

Congratulations to Jafet Lara Moreno (3-J) for representing Quinney in the local Youth Art Month Art Show!  His "mad scientist portrait" will be displayed at the Neville Public Museum in Green Bay in February and then has the chance to be displayed at the state art show in Madison!

Please save cereal boxes!  Students use them for sketchbook covers, and we start saving now for next year!

Crossing Guard Appreciation Week is January 14-18. Don’t forget to thank our crossing guards near the water tower and at the intersection of Ann & Fieldcrest for all their hard work and dedication. Your safety is very important to them. Do you want to let them know how much you care?

Here are a couple of ideas:

• Write them a thank you note
• Give them a small token of appreciation: Pocket hand warmers, a cookie, a gift card, coffee or hot chocolate, etc.

Fire Prevention Week

This year, Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13. The Kaukauna Fire Department uses the entire month to work with classroom teachers with instruction. This year’s theme is “LOOK, LISTEN, LEARN, be aware, fire can happen anywhere”. Each grade level will have the opportunity to have a visit in the classroom.

Red Ribbon Week

National Red Ribbon Week is dedicated to making our schools a bully free and drug free place! Classes will be talking more about red ribbon week in guidance lessons during the month of October with Miss. Duda!

Red Ribbon Week Dress up days are October 22nd - 24th.  Students can join in the prevention spirit and dress-up in the themes below:

November Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences dates are around the corner on November 13, 15, and 16.  Parents can sign up for a conference time online with Sign-Up Genius.  We will send the information via a E-mail message from Parent Portal and also a paper note with the link information.  The information will be sent before Oct. 24th.

Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) News

Greetings EQ parents! Please consider joining us at our next gathering on Tuesday, November 27 at 6:00 PM. Come and share your ideas as we plan events and fundraisers for our school year! We are also looking for help with a number of our continuing programs including Box Tops (much can be completed from home) and Scholastic Book Fair.

Also remember to save and send in your box tops as an easy way to help earn $ for Quinney! 

Background Checks Timeline

Background checks which are older than 6 years old were removed from Infinite Campus this summer. These volunteers will need to complete another background check form to be considered for volunteering again. The process takes a minimum of two weeks, so if you are interested in chaperoning or volunteering, check early!

Picking Your Child Up Afterschool?

All children being picked up leave school via the playground blacktop area to meet parents/guardians.  If your child is has a short wait for pick-up after school, we have the students wait near the picnic tables on the playground near the corner of the school where there will be supervision until 3:20 PM. In the event that you are late, for the safety of your child, the supervisor will bring them into the office so that you can be contacted.

Leaving for Appointments & Phone Calls During the Day

If your child has an appointment that requires them to leave during the school day, please include a note in the agenda planner. Having the information in the morning will help have your child ready in a timely manner when you arrive to pick them up. When you arrive to pick up your child, please come into the office to sign them out. Your child will be called down at that time, we do not allow students to wait in the lobby for their safety. 

Your phone calls are important to us!  When calling during the school day, please be aware that you may be transferred to the staff member's voicemail if it is during instructional time.  We work hard to avoid interrupting instructional time if at all possible.  If an immediate message is needed, please let the office staff know and that message will be delivered via note/in person to the staff member.

4th Grade Students & Parents - 5th grade BAND

Next year when you are in 5th grade, you will be able to participate in our district's band program so we want to make you aware of a change in our beginning band recruitment process. Students who are interested in being part of the percussion section will be expected to have at least 1 year of piano lessons.
