Help with Smart/Electronic Watches
With the return of students from winter break we have noticed an increase in the number of smart watches/electronic watches that students are wearing to school. While we do not put a complete ban on cell phones, smart watches at school, and other electronic devices at school, we do ask for parent/family help in reminding students to use those devices appropriately. Because these devices are a little more immediately accessible from being worn, we have seen that they can cause distraction from learning, as students can easily and subtly use them to play games, send messages etc. Notifications and ‘pings’ from watches can also cause distraction.
As listed in our school handbook, student use of cellular telephones, electronic paging or other two-way communication devices shall be allowed on school premises as follows:1. Devices must remain off and in student’s locker/backpack during the school day including before and after school supervision times (7:35 AM – 3:20 PM).2. Students may be allowed to use electronic devices on field trips or specific classroom activities with permission from the teacher in consultation with the building principal prior to the activity.3. Students may use such devices if approved by the building principal for medical, school, educational, vocational or other legitimate purposes in accordance to Policy 443.5.
January Focus = PERSEVERANCE
- January Focus = PERSEVERANCE
PurposeFull Pursuit:
Part of practicing Perseverance is setting specific goals and developing action steps to work towards them! Optional materials: You can gather a bunch of magazines or newspapers — you can often find inexpensive ones from local thrift stores or libraries — and print out images from online or use your own craft supplies to draw your own images! Directions: Discuss as a family a family goal. Some Examples: We will go on a walk every night, or we want to complete 2 chores every night. Talk about not just the goal but how it feels to accomplish that goal. Next, you will work as a family to create 1 poster with their goal and action step pictures (how will you complete your goal). As a family use 1 piece of paper or poster. Spend time together finding an image that not only identify the goal but the feeling once completed as well. Place the image in the middle of the paper. Then cut out and glue or draw images that show all of the action steps you will take to get there all around your goal. You can also glue or draw words of inspiration and encouragement. When your collages are done place them together somewhere everyone can see them regularly. Now not only do you have a goal and action plan, but you have accountability partners to check in with you and motivate you to practice Perseverance!
Conversation Starters:
- When you are stuck or in a challenging situation, how can flexible thinking help you to Persevere?
- Why is it important to keep trying when we are in challenging situations?
