It is Safety Week!

The Kaukauna Area School District makes school safety a priority. We implement safety drills on a

regular basis which include fire, tornado, hold, lockdown and evacuation. All of our buildings are equipped with safe entrances and security cameras throughout. In light of unfortunate events that have happened throughout the world, we have adopted a philosophy with how we prepare students for the potential of having an intruder in our schools. ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) strategies provide students and staff with options to stay safe, make safe choices and save as many lives as possible. In recognition of the importance of practicing these drills early in the school year, the Kaukauna Area School District has established School Safety Week. In an effort to accommodate scheduling at each school within the district, the initial drills (outlined below) will run between September 16 and September 20 . During these five school days, students will be exposed to all of our safety drill procedures and the ALICE strategies. To assist students with understanding ALICE, we have implemented the following plan:


Throughout next week, students will take part in the following activities:

• 4K-grade 4 students will listen to and discuss the book I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared! Because I Know All About ALICE by Julia Cook.
• Fire Drill (tentatively planned for Monday)
• Tornado Drill (tentatively planned for Wednesday)
• Hold/Lockdown Drill
• Evacuation to Rally Points Drill (tentatively planned for Tuesday) (this will involve students and staff relocating to a location near their school, but off the school grounds).
• If you do not give consent for your child to practice moving to the rally point with their teacher and classmates, please contact the principal.

Please know the intent of featuring these drills in September is to educate, protect and stimulate conversation among teachers and students. Your child/children will likely come home and share information with you as well. If you should have any questions or concerns prior to the drills, or following Safety Week, please contact Mrs. Knapp.

ABC Raffle Prizes

Hello Quinney Families,

Last year, we tried something new to acknowledge students who continually show the Quinney ABC’s (Act Respectful, Be Responsible, Come Ready to Learn) and the students and staff really enjoyed it! So we're going to implement it again this year...it's called the Quinney ABC Raffle. Students have a chance each month to earn tickets for a drawing for fantastic prizes. Each month there are at least six prizes to choose from. One or two of these prizes are time spent with a teacher and a friend. The other prizes are donated by staff and families. If you would be willing to donate prizes we would greatly appreciate your support.

We’ve made it easy for you by creating a wish list on Amazon. You can order directly from Amazon and the item can be shipped to Quinney. Just click here Quinney ABC’s Raffle Prizes to bring you to the wish list. When you checkout, select to have it shipped to Electa Quinney. Please check yes to the gift receipt so we can make sure to thank you for your support.

You may also find items at your local store as well. These items should be new and please keep the cost/value between $5.00-$15.00. Example items purchased from Hobby Lobby last year were: Venus Flytrap Kit ($9.00), Slime Kit ($8.00), Emoji Journal Kit ($6.24), and Painting Rock Cactus Kit ($7.00). Parent Advisory Committee Meeting

Come join us for the first PAC Meeting! Tuesday, September 24, 6-7 p.m. in the Library Media Center. We need you at PAC! We have such a great team and wonderful plan for this year's Electa Quinney PAC! It will be easy to join the group at this time. We will work together to provide awesome events and school spirit and support. Volunteering with the PAC can be so rewarding to you, to your children and our staff. Why should you come to this meeting? Being a part of PAC and volunteering with Quinney helps your child, our teachers and staff, and provides a sense of community and family for our school. How are your conversations at home about school going?  What Went Well Wednesday is Electa Quinney's effort to help our families experience rich conversations about school and continue to encourage a growth mindset for our students. 

With many of us as parents as well, we realize the impacts daily schedules and activities have on our children, parents, and families as a whole.  We know that "research...reveals...: that parents, of all backgrounds, don’t need to buy expensive educational toys or digital devices for their kids in order to give them an edge. They don’t need to chauffeur their offspring to enrichment classes or test-prep courses. What they need to do with their children is much simpler: talk." We know that our parents want to be involved in their child’s development and schooling; and, we know that a positive attitude and a growth mindset help students be successful.  

We hope having no homework on Wednesday's other than to reflect and discuss what has gone well at school will bring a positive light to your conversations at home and what students are sharing about school.

Kaukauna Community Activity Fair

Date: September 11, 2019
Time: 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Description:
Please join us for this night for families with students in grades 4K-8th grade to gain information on the community activities (clubs, sports, organizations) available to their student(s).

The event will be held in the River View Middle School Commons/Cafeteria - 101 Oak St., Kaukauna, WI 54130

Here are some of the groups scheduled to attend: Kaukauna Running Club, Kaukauna Youth Baseball, Girls Scouts, Whiteheads Martial Arts Academy, YMCA Fox Cities, Kaukauna Wrestling, Kaukauna Public Library, Gymnastics, AP Vaulting Club, Kaukauna Recreation Department, Kaukauna Girls Basketball Association, Fox Valley Mindful Learners, and more!

Background Checks Timeline

Background checks which are older than 6 years old were removed from Infinite Campus this summer. These volunteers will need to complete another background check form to be considered for volunteering again. The process takes a minimum of two weeks, so if you are interested in chaperoning, check early!

Guidelines for Picking Up After School

If your child is picked up after school, they will be waiting near the picnic tables on the playground near the corner of the school where there will be supervision until 3:20 PM. In the event that you are late, for the safety of your child, the supervisor will bring them into the office so that you can be contacted.

Leaving for Appointments & Phone Calls During the Day

If your child has an appointment that requires them to leave during the school day, please include a note in the agenda planner. Having the information in the morning will help have your child ready in a timely manner when you arrive to pick them up. When you arrive to pick up your child, please come into the office to sign them out. Your child will be called down at that time, we do not allow students to wait in the lobby for their safety. 

Your phone calls are important to us!  When calling during the school day, please be aware that you may be transferred to the staff member's voicemail if it is during instructional time.  We work hard to avoid interrupting instructional time if at all possible.  If an immediate message is needed, please let the office staff know and that message will be delivered via note/in person to the staff member.

Welcome Back!

We are all excited as the new school year is just getting started!  Our theme for the '19-20 year is Electa Quinney "Superheroes - Masters in Learning"!  We are continuing to plan upcoming events for the students, including cool tools demonstrating the A, B, C expectations of Acting Respectful, Be Responsible and Coming Ready to Learn and all school assemblies to celebrate the new school year! 


Our goal is to support your student in the best way that we can. This blog will be updated weekly/bi-weekly with important news on lunch, EQ school events, upcoming dates of importance, reminders of school procedures, and more from our KASD community that help to enrich the lives of our students and families!  You will receive an e-mail from the Infinite Campus Messenger as long as you have "general messages" enabled in the Parent Portal.

Families wishing to purchase Quinney Wear can make a purchase by clicking here.  The sale is open through for ordering through be Monday, Sept. 10th ( apparel should arrive in time for Homecoming on Sept. 27) .   If you misplace the information it is also be available on the Quinney school website in the  News, Announcements & Links  area.  

New this year....We will have EQ Spirit Wear day every Monday.  Students are not required to have or wear EQ Wear, they are always welcome to wear anything orange, black, or KASD wear.

Arrival and Dismissal 

We were fortunate to receive new parking lots one year ago! The parking lots were a great step in helping the flow of traffic at arrival and dismissal times. We worked with Kobussen, Safe Routes to School, the City of Kaukauna and the Kaukauna Police Department to form a plan that will help with arrival and dismissal traffic but even more importantly, student safety.  As a reminder for our families and visitors here are the important information and reminders about arrival and dismissal...

Important changes and reminders:

• North Loop (closest to the building) is for 4K and Special Education needs.
• South Loop (closest to County Road CE) is for Staff Parking and K-4 grade Buses ONLY.
• Students should report to the playground to line up in the AM and students being picked up will exit to the playground to meet parents/guardians.
• Visitor parking for parents/guardians needing to “enter the building” is located in the North Loop.
• The West side of Sullivan Avenue (along the playground) will now be used for HUG & GO drop off.  When entering the HUG & GO zone, please pull forward as far as possible to allow for additional cars. Students exit the vehicle next to the sidewalk. Once you have dropped off your child please exit the HUG & GO area quickly.  No parking or standing.

THANK YOU for using CROSSWALKS to cross streets!  Crossing between cars of mid-street is DANGEROUS and we continue to re-teach students to use crosswalks for safety.

KNAPP'S NOTES

So this is it! The culmination of an "Rockstar" year at Electa Quinney!  We have many days of learning remaining and a few very fun events in store.  May 30th will be our THIRD annual Color Run.  This is a super fun event for all!  The benefit to this fundraiser is that it is also a super way to bring our school community together for a fun evening!  We hope you can join us for part of the time or the entire evening!  Students also will participate in Field Day the afternoon of June 4th and a summer book bag event in the morning that day.  Thank you to the PAC for all of their support with these great things!  Thank you, parents and students, for making this an amazing school year!

LIBRARY DEADLINES FOR END OF YEAR

The last Library checkout day was be May 8 (day 6-end of rotation). In order for the library staff to conduct their annual inventory of materials, ALL BOOKS WERE DUE ON FRIDAY, MAY 17. Library Skills classes and Library Story Time will run through Tuesday, May 28. Please help your child in returning their books if they have not done so yet. The Library staff will send out notices regarding replacement fees and fines.

National Bike Safety Month

National Bike Month is being celebrated in May and is a great opportunity to promote the positive aspects of the activity.  Biking can be a fun way to increase physical activity, reduce traffic, help the environment, and improve both mental and physical health.  By teaching students bicycle safety at a young age it will be giving them the opportunity to have a fun and healthy activity that could last a lifetime.  

With warm biking weather finally here and as a part of National Bike Month, we encourage students to get out and bike for physical activity and enjoyment.  For the remainder of May...

1. We will share with students a calendar to track their biking activity.  When students turn the calendar in they will be entered into a drawing for bike prizes given to us by Safe Routes to School of East Central Wisconsin including bike helmets, t-shirts, sunglasses and more.
2. Students can also submit a picture of themselves on their bike with their helmet on to be hung in the lobby OR make sign/poster about bike safety to be hung at school to receive an additional entry for the prize drawing!

With the end of the school year fast approaching we ask that you take note of your child/children’s lunch account balance.  Accounts will have to be brought up to date by the end of the school year.  If we do not receive payment by Tuesday, June 11th, 2019, and the account balance is more than a $20.00 negative it will be sent to the Kaukauna Area School District Collection Agency.  

If you choose to let your child/children’s lunch account balance go below the $5.00 mark because of the end of the year, please remember the Kaukauna Area School District Messenger Service will continue to contact you.  This is an automated service and cannot be turned off.
